What is it about Spring that makes me want to wander through the fields and woods randomly shooting picture after picture after picture of newly bloomed and sprouted beauties?... oh yeah! Is it the lack of cold and wind and rain...NOPE! It's just that I love the promise of new life!There is a whole new world out there right now......

As I worked my way across several states, I rediscovered the beauty of familiar scenes through the power of more black and white pics. It can take you back in time just with the removal of color. There can be a nostalgia that evokes personal memories that makes each photo a unique experience for each viewer.

Something that really intrigues me is black and white photos. There is such a power in simplifying an image by removing distractions - colors, extra subjects. I experiment with closing in on the subject, cropping out any extras and using black and white. The subject becomes the sole focus in the picture and captures your attention. The next 3 photos are from rural AZ.

The big island of Hawaii graciously shared some of her beauty with me - water, rock, sand, sun, vegetation. Very basic parts of nature that create some of the most mind-blowingly gorgeous creations! All pictures were taken with a simple digital camera (Kodak C813). I believe pictures are more about the eye than the equipment. Don't ever be afraid to use simple cameras to experiment. There are whole collections of pictures taken with cell phone cameras. It's all photography!!

More views from the back of the Harley as we wound through New Mexico... I like to find beauty in the everyday things we pass all the time without noticing. For me it's focusing on some aspect of the object that is unique such as the light shining through the seed pod or the detail in the concrete supports on a bridge. Two of the latest pics are taken on the go, but I actually stopped for the other two! Can you tell which is which??

New Mexico is the location of the following pictures. On a beautiful ride through the nearly uninhabited spaces we happened upon the National Radio Astronomy Observatory with 27 antennas. The latest pictures are from my favorite way to photograph - from the back seat of the Harley Davidson. I like to push myself to take awesome pictures (in focus, hopefully) while we cruise down the highway. I also take many out the window of the vehicle as we are traveling along through beautiful scenery. (One time it was in the middle of a terrible wind and rain storm!) Of course, I find most anything beautiful and interesting! I love to challenge myself to do well and be creative under difficult circumstances. I don't use tripods much. Right now, I prefer to do it the hard way... maybe some day I'll move into my "tripod period" of photogaphy.

Pictures are fun, labels add interest, but I thought I would add a few comments or thoughts occasionally to mix it up. I have had questions about my photography and so I am answering those hows and whys and wheres.
I typically use my Canon Digital Rebel EOS 300D that I "inherited" from a sister-in-law. (Although sometimes I sneak pictures in taken with a small Kodak digital camera.) My favorite lens is the Canon 28-135mm. It allows me to take a wide variety of pics with the same lens - macro included. The telephoto feature allows me to take much more detail without having to actually "climb the mountain" or "swim the river".
I love to crop and adjust the lighting with pictures, but I don't like to change the actual picture by adding things such as a beam of light where there really wasn't one. My interest lies in composing the picture in my head before I ever click the shutter.
